GLASSMAN
CORVETTE BODY RESTORATION

Who's Who:

1953 Supercharged Corvette Owner: Dave Ferguson

The 1953 McCulloch Supercharged Corvette (left picture). This is car #24 that Art Oehrli and his brother John Oehrli, Jr. purchased from the President of Standard Oil in September 1953. Together they designed the first Supercharged Corvette. Their intent was to produce supercharger kits for installation on the Corvette production line. As we know, GM went to the V8 in 1955, doing away with the "ole" six-banger. Dave Ferguson restored the car in 1988, which was re-skinned and painted by The Glassman. The Plasticon hardtop was reproduced by The Glassman. The car debuted at the NCRS National Event in Bend, Oregon in August 1989 and was the hit of the event.

The 1955 imported Corvette (right picture). This Corvette went from the assembly line straight to the King of the Belgium, King Baudouin (1930-1993). The car returned to the United States approximately 20 years ago. It was purchased and restored in recent years by Dave Ferguson. The body work and paint was done by The Glassman. There is a special ID plate on the fire wall, and it has the kilometer speed-o-meter which reads "0 to 210 kilo."

Dave Ferguson graduated from Arizona State University with a Masters degree in Mathematics. His first Corvette was a 1960 fulie. In December 1964, six months after Dave and Jan Ferguson were married, they bought a '65 Roadster, which they still have today, bone stock and original.

Dave graduated from the U.S. Test Pilots School in 1972. Dick Scobee, commander of the Challenger Space Shuttle, was also a graduate and classmate. Dave was an Air Force officer and test pilot at the USAF Flight Test Center at Edwards Air Force Base, California, flying many of the nation's most advanced fighter air craft. Several of the test aircraft still remain classified. Dave flew two tours in Vietnam. He flew the Route Pack Six, reputed to be the most hazardous fighter assignments during the war. These assignments took pilots on regular tactical runs over the heavily-protected Hanoi corridor in North Vietnam. He is a highly decorated pilot, holding the Nation's Legion of Merit with one oak leaf cluster, the Distinguished Flying Cross with one oak leaf cluster, and the Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters.

In 1979 Dave joined Lockheed in the test pilot program. Dave flew the YF-22A on its maiden flight. He served as test pilot in Lockheed's F117 program, and was second company pilot to fly the plane. The F117 is the nation's first stealth aircraft.

Dave was a Master Judge, and was the National Team Leader for 1953-1955 Corvettes in the NCRS. He has restored 12 Corvettes and has owned approximately 50. Dave's main window is 1953-1957 Corvettes. Any cars after that he calls new.

I have been blessed to work on many cars for Dave -- four of them to completion. Many of the others I worked on to various degrees, with Dave coaching me along the way.

Thank you Dave Ferguson, it's been a privilege to know and be a friend to such an accomplished person.
